Knock at the Cabin

[:

[00:00:09] Frank Roll iii: Blockbuster Hollywood and the independent video store

[:

[00:00:19] Scott Moran: And ask the question, what the fuck is that? Does this hold up? And just, what the hell is a good movie? Anyway, I'm Frank Roll. I'm Scott Moran and we are the last video store

[:

[00:00:31] Scott Moran: What

[:

[00:00:43] Frank Roll iii: I think I have. That's. It sounds familiar, but I was blown

[:

[00:00:52] Frank Roll iii: yeah, it's like source code.

[:

[00:01:01] Frank Roll iii: torso and they're keeping the torso alive cuz they can stimulate the brain to do the work. Dude, that dude's getting overtime.

[:

[00:01:12] Frank Roll iii: toast. Fucking pigs. Did

[:

[00:01:16] Frank Roll iii: John Ham episode?

[:

[00:01:20] Scott Moran: Christmas episode where he's in the cabin with the guy and then he's like, Telling him stories and it's like three mini episodes. And, uh, he like goes to this lady's house and makes a personal assistant, downloads her consciousness into the personal assistant and he makes like years pass to get it to, to do whatever he wants.

[:

[00:01:42] Frank Roll iii: John Ham. Yeah. Why do I not, I know that I've seen all of them because I felt

[:

[00:01:56] Frank Roll iii: don't know. It's maybe, maybe not. Might be my favorite one. I'll have to keep that one in the, the old locker storage up there.

[:

first

[:

[00:02:22] Frank Roll iii: doing porn.

[:

[00:02:26] Scott Moran: those scarred me and then the next two are really, really high brow sci-fi as far as I'm concerned.

[:

[00:02:40] Frank Roll iii: With the two guys and the, yeah.

[:

[00:02:58] Scott Moran: Oh shit,

[:

[00:03:03] Scott Moran: been too. Yeah. Cuz a lot of people will be like, ah, the first season was good, but then after that, that episode is marvelous as is the one with Kurt Russell's son, the VR one. Where it gets stuck in the other world. Cuz that horrifies me cuz I do a lot of vr.

[:

[00:03:25] Frank Roll iii: Um, cabin on the Left in the Woods.

[:

[00:03:35] Scott Moran: I watched it last night. It put me

[:

[00:03:51] Scott Moran: coming.

[:

[00:04:04] Frank Roll iii: shame.

[:

[00:04:21] Scott Moran: Like there's some doubt in this. He got that. How about that M Night Shamon cameo in this one too, on the home shopping network? Yes.

[:

[00:04:34] Scott Moran: This was rare for him. Shalon though, as far as like him in that commercial. He was like being real boisterous. Mm-hmm. You never see him like that in a movie?

[:

[00:04:54] Frank Roll iii: Then just, and what gets me is he like peels out and drives off. It's like maybe not in front of him.

[:

[00:05:03] Scott Moran: Drive this home. Yeah. God dude, he's leaving in a

[:

[00:05:12] Scott Moran: the first time I ever have actually thought about that. That's an inappropriate way to drive away from a man whose wife you killed by with a car,

[:

[00:05:21] Frank Roll iii: Yeah. So then you burn out and

[:

[00:05:32] Frank Roll iii: glass. Oh. Or what about, um, do you know what made me jump the very first time under the door? The hand under the door, like you knew it was coming.

[:

[00:05:45] Scott Moran: Yeah. The birthday party footage freaked me when Joaquin

[:

[00:05:59] Frank Roll iii: Like you might have to watch me walk out to my truck when I leave, but you know. Well, no, I mean, or you never know when it's an Olympic gymnast. A female Olympic gymnast. Sorry. That's enough. Shalon references. Swing away. Yeah.

[:

[00:06:23] Scott Moran: What happens at the end of the book? I'll tell you at the end of this episode, what happens

[:

[00:06:31] Frank Roll iii: Hey, and why the fuck does DoorDash think I need 35% off Dick's Sporting Goods at 10 0 6 at night? Is the algorithm fucked up or do they just don't care? Maybe you need an

[:

[00:06:41] Frank Roll iii: Do I need to know about 35% off at Dick's through DoorDash at 10:06 PM on a

[:

[00:06:48] Scott Moran: Is

[:

[00:07:04] Frank Roll iii: I mean this was, had to have been rated R,

[:

[00:07:08] Frank Roll iii: Um, obviously not. No. Huh? No, because there was a huge thing about the happening being his first rated R film. And then I remember that's one of the things I thought watching this was like

[:

[00:07:21] Scott Moran: I like the happening, but. I understand if you were disappointed. It's on

[:

[00:07:30] Scott Moran: Should have followed John Lezama the whole movie if you ask me, because John Lewa amo is a fucking knockout in that he fucking kills it. Good performance, but, and Batista in this man.

[:

[00:07:50] Frank Roll iii: just such a stout man.

[:

[00:08:02] Scott Moran: Ron. Ron. Ron, who's also in Mite Channel On's Apple Series. Oh, okay. He was good in that part. The two leads were fucking amazing. Did

[:

[00:08:23] Frank Roll iii: He

[:

[00:08:24] Frank Roll iii: Pete and he could definitely be one of the brothers. He's like the British brother. Like dad went overseas for a business trip, boom. Third Pete the girl, the,

[:

[00:08:40] Scott Moran: Mm-hmm. They go to the like, Basically they go to one of the Judd's house. She like fucks with them for two days. It's worth watching. You've told me about it before. Yes. And Kelly watched it. It was uh, it's a low budget horror movie by Bria Grant. Does it have one of the Judds in it horror movie? No. Katie Sigal plays a sort of Judd type.

[:

[00:09:04] Frank Roll iii: Futurama. Was it Lena? Lela. Lela.

[:

[00:09:09] Frank Roll iii: There's certain

[:

[00:09:14] Frank Roll iii: It's the same reason why I have to remember the words. Clyde's Dale in Carabiner.

[:

[00:09:23] Frank Roll iii: But it's the fact that I could not remember either one. For years,

[:

[00:09:31] Frank Roll iii: feet. Yeah. The Budweiser ones.

[:

[00:09:37] Frank Roll iii: na. Drink

[:

[00:09:44] Frank Roll iii: I was gonna say, I remember that.

[:

[00:09:48] Scott Moran: light man. It's about and low. Uh, the song starts, starts to snow. I don't remember that. It was a song. It was catchy. All the beer commercials I remember are from when I was a small child or up to like Bud Ice with the penguin.

[:

[00:10:09] Frank Roll iii: I had the

[:

[00:10:18] Frank Roll iii: Was it? Yeah, bud Ice was stronger than like Budweiser. Oh, that was why, yeah, that's why we got, we were like, it's cheaper and it's stronger. Yeah, that's why know Painful Teenager Logic. Well, it's like, how would I steal reserve?

[:

[00:10:40] Scott Moran: So when you were watching this movie, did you think that the World was for sure ending because it was an mite Shamon movie or, okay,

[:

[00:10:55] Frank Roll iii: What's his name from Ancient Aliens? It's aliens guy. Sometimes

[:

[00:11:02] Frank Roll iii: very in depth

[:

[00:11:08] Frank Roll iii: sci-fi

[:

[00:11:14] Frank Roll iii: yeah.

[:

[00:11:30] Scott Moran: like you were much more uncomfortable than me. I don't have children. So, I

[:

[00:11:45] Frank Roll iii: Personality anymore. I tend to look at the downside of things and when I watched this movie, there was just such a lack of positivity, but it was real, you know what

[:

[00:12:02] Frank Roll iii: in a sense, I feel like in reality, things aren't, you know, to a degree getting shittier and then you throw in that whole, like there's a greater.

[:

[00:12:21] Scott Moran: wasn't. Right. It was very much Paul tremble's thing When he writes is you don't know if what you're experiencing is real or not. Mm-hmm. Uh, his first book that I read, it might have been his first book, uh, head Full of Ghosts.

[:

[00:12:57] Scott Moran: Yeah. The, the idea spreads. Not all of his books are exactly like that, but even the book I read, uh, survivor Song, that's about a zombie thing with two women. One of them's pregnant, trying to get across town. She's like in labor. And they're trying to get to the hospital during a zombie outbreak. Oh. Like

[:

[00:13:18] Frank Roll iii: Yeah.

[:

[00:13:30] Frank Roll iii: I always feel like that makes it classy. I really

[:

[00:13:33] Frank Roll iii: That's my shit. It's a good touch.

[:

[00:13:38] Scott Moran: was the perfect story for Mny channel on if I was gonna pick a big director to do this, and I think he did a good enough job. I'm sure that the marketing was great. I'm sure there's a lot of people who read the book that were like, oh

[:

[00:13:55] Scott Moran: office?

[:

[00:14:01] Frank Roll iii: I hope it did. Okay. So a lot of times lately I'm disappointed with the marketing and like you watch a preview or you watch a trailer and then you watch the movie and you're like, that's not this movie.

[:

[00:14:18] Scott Moran: It made more than its budget. It did, yeah. Okay, so opening weekend it did 14 million. That's fine and it was, it cost 20 million to

[:

[00:14:30] Frank Roll iii: Two completely different fucking things. Whoever came up with the preview, the trailers for shadow in the cloud, they need to go away. They need to not do that ever again. It's not right if what you're seeing in the trailer has fucking nothing to do with the fucking movie. I don't mislead people. We have enough of that.

[:

[00:14:51] Scott Moran: You know what I mean? Yeah. There was like, there was something we watched, uh, the marketing for the movie was don't tell anyone. And that can be good if you do it in the right way. Did Witches in the

[:

[00:15:04] Scott Moran: in the woods had no budget and no one saw it but us.

[:

[00:15:09] Frank Roll iii: ever seen them. But I feel like that's when, where we watched a trailer before, we

[:

[00:15:19] Frank Roll iii: with this podcast.

[:

[00:15:35] Frank Roll iii: And you know what? This one was not misleading.

[:

[00:15:40] Frank Roll iii: was, it, I was curious. I was curious. I was in, I was like, what is, what is it? I hadn't read the book. I didn't know it was gonna happen. But you see Batista in the woods and it's like, hi.

[:

[00:16:02] Frank Roll iii: Mm-hmm. I think a really good one word is despair.

[:

[00:16:14] Scott Moran: You have to find new authors. There were so many books coming out nowadays cuz you can just publish whatever, but like Paul Tremble, Jeremy Robert Johnson. Steven Graham Jones. These are like the top tier of horror writers these days, but we treat authors like shit now. They don't get paid a lot. They'll never be a Stephen King or a JK Rowling maybe again, ever.

[:

[00:16:40] Frank Roll iii: Do you think Kendall killed the author?

[:

[00:16:56] Scott Moran: And I think that it's like, I think that it's like when the New York Times or these bestseller lists come out, that's what dictates what is gonna make a lot of money. But still, it's only gonna make that person enough money to get to the next book if you do really well. Do you think

[:

[00:17:18] Scott Moran: Uh, no, I don't think

[:

[00:17:21] Scott Moran: goal. No, I don't think that's the goal. Okay. No, I think it's still, I think there's still people who just wanna write books because a book is not a movie. It's not the same, it's not the same way you're getting a story. There's so much more to like it happening in your

[:

[00:17:35] Frank Roll iii: It's one of those things we can't lose in the world. We won't storytelling,

[:

[00:17:48] Frank Roll iii: I've talked to people that are getting 'em to write books.

[:

[00:17:54] Scott Moran: changed. Yeah. That's crazy. And I don't wanna see the people who are passing off AI written books as their own work.

[:

[00:18:04] Frank Roll iii: It's like the photo competition. The guy who won, he used an AI generated photo. And it was really just for conversation. But then he actually fucking won. That's crazy. That's where we're at. It was just supposed, I don't know. Look, don't quote me. We just had a quick conversation about it. I'm sleepy. It's after work.

[:

[00:18:36] Frank Roll iii: It's the, well, what is this gonna do to the creativity of an individual versus this artificial intelligence?

[:

[00:18:46] Frank Roll iii: like, we're, we're like at

[:

[00:18:55] Scott Moran: It's making fucking pictures. That's cute. But we're, we're many years away from Skynet.

[:

[00:19:06] Scott Moran: engineers better than that. Yeah. That's the real problem. I've, I've talked about this with engineers. That's, yeah. It's, uh, I talk about engineers all the time in the tech industry too, is like, it starts out.

[:

[00:19:30] Frank Roll iii: Look, okay. A week after that, we're watching Gungho with

[:

[00:19:37] Scott Moran: A one year elephant.

[:

[00:19:45] Frank Roll iii: you? I don't know. Lines from Gungho like I know the movie, but I do not. One

[:

[00:19:50] Frank Roll iii: Uh, you know, you know what that sound is? I will be driving back home through the storm as the storm is passing through again.

[:

[00:20:00] Frank Roll iii: I've got.

[:

[00:20:07] Scott Moran: one of us has to die or Frank can't get home because God is gonna kill us all. So actual spoiler alert, this time I'm now gonna talk about the end of the movie. Okay. Are

[:

[00:20:17] Scott Moran: end of the book?

[:

[00:20:37] Scott Moran: Like, uh, Dave Batista's character is killed by one that tries to back out. Oh, one of his own? Yes. Okay. And, uh, they don't wanna do this anymore. Change of heart. Yes. Things go a little sideways in a different way. And then when dying is an accident and then they decide, fuck this world, fuck God, we're gonna go out and just face whatever's coming, and they just leave.

[:

[00:21:25] Scott Moran: Yeah. But I understand why he made the changes that he did to it for a less fucked up ending of the movie because it clearly, it's still affected you to the max. When I read the book, I had that devil all the time feeling. Yeah. You know,

[:

[00:21:46] Frank Roll iii: Wasn't happy. Fuck everything. It seemed like it was an overcast day every day. And I like overcast days, but it

[:

[00:21:57] Frank Roll iii: Yeah. Fucking, you're not in the south in that time.

[:

[00:22:05] Frank Roll iii: he wasn't fucking blue anymore.

[:

[00:22:15] Scott Moran: girl, they're fantastic. They all did good. That guy from Frozen, man, he's real good. And Mind Hunter. Mind

[:

[00:22:27] Scott Moran: Frozen? Yeah, he's like a musical theater guy. Oh, that makes sense.

[:

[00:22:36] Frank Roll iii: did season two,

[:

[00:22:41] Frank Roll iii: about Elsa and honor sisters. Elsa has magical powers, snow and ice, and when they're playing as a kid, she hurts the younger sister to Anna.

[:

[00:23:06] Frank Roll iii: Nana's like, oh, I'm gonna go Sam. But Elsa's like, oh, I turned it into a snow Iceland. And so she runs off into the mountains and sings this song called Let It Go. And then like Anna and Christoph and Ola, they all have to go find her and spend, I almost forgot to spend. And then they find her, and then Anna's like, Hey, it's okay.

[:

[00:23:43] Frank Roll iii: And it turns out it was like the love of her sister that saves her. And then all the bad people that tried to take over while Elsa was missing, they get like caught. And then like Elsa learns how to control it and she unfreezes shit and then everything goes back to normal in the kingdom. But we got to experience the adventure that Anna and Christoph and Ola and Finn had trying to go get Elsa back.
