Pearl and a Visit The Last Blockbuster on Earth

[:

[00:00:09] Frank Roll III: Blockbuster, Hollywood and the independent video store

[:

[00:00:18] Scott Moran: Receive streaming services and ask the question, what the fuck is that? Does this hold up? And just, what the hell is a good movie? Anyway, I'm Frank Roll. I'm Scott Moran and we are the last video store

[:

[00:00:31] Scott Moran: What,

[:

[00:00:39] Frank Roll III: It was cool. It smelled like, it smelled like a video store. We got there about an hour after it opened. I think it opened at 10. We got there about 11. Uh, there was like nobody in the park. I was kind of nervous. I was like, God, like locals who come in here and rent.

[:

[00:00:56] Scott Moran: tourist, it is kind of weird that you went to a video store, like you went across the country to a video store and you didn't run anything.

[:

[00:01:13] Frank Roll III: Hope that it has

[:

[00:01:22] Frank Roll III: but then I didn't even look at how much they were. I was like, man, no. It's like family, me, family there.

[:

[00:01:36] Scott Moran: boxes. Yeah, and I, I can't remember the last time I just read a bunch of movie boxes, like even went to Best Buy, just randomly looking for something Uhhuh.

[:

[00:01:47] Frank Roll III: what's crazy is they've kept up so it's not like a time capsule from 10 years ago. There's movies that have come out in the last 10 years on the shelf, so it was cool cuz it was like I looked for the new arrivals. And I shouldn't have been weird about going in because we were just the first ones from the time that we got there to like 10, 15 minutes in the store was packed with just visitors.

[:

[00:02:11] Scott Moran: daughter like, what the fuck are we doing? Had

[:

[00:02:25] Frank Roll III: Man. She had a snow White Pez. She was good, but she didn't give a shit about the store itself. I was like, it's fine.

[:

[00:02:36] Frank Roll III: had a wall of VHS tapes. For rent? No, like it was like an art piece. Oh. Like a full bay had been converted into just VHS on a wall.

[:

[00:02:51] Scott Moran: Yeah, you brought me some. Yeah. He brought me a hat and a

[:

[00:02:56] Scott Moran: store. You know, the things that make me happier are just useless.

[:

[00:03:09] Frank Roll III: I feel you. I bought more things than I should have just for me, because I was like, ah. And then before we left the return box, I looked at the return and it was like, returns.

[:

[00:03:20] Scott Moran: you open

[:

[00:03:30] Scott Moran: particle board and yeah, it just

[:

[00:03:35] Scott Moran: sense memory overload.

[:

[00:03:43] Frank Roll III: Anyway, what's weird about this strip center was the strip center, you know, you can tell that hasn't changed much. It there's enough room for like two or three businesses. Like it's that small of a strip center.

[:

[00:04:01] Scott Moran: the same if it's not Pizza

[:

[00:04:10] Frank Roll III: Oh, that's great. But it was like painted over. So we were like, that looks like it was a fucking Pizza Hut. When

[:

[00:04:32] Scott Moran: Well, look, they, they were the only Pizza Hut

[:

[00:04:38] Scott Moran: Yeah, I guess it could have. I, in West Virginia, pizza Hut was the shit. But it was also the nineties, eighties, nineties. Pizza Hut was just better. Look, there

[:

[00:04:47] Scott Moran: in.

[:

[00:04:54] Frank Roll III: The, the apples are just different. Um, no, this, it had a great Mr. Gaddy's, and then within a year that gaddy's like changed hands and it was trash. Gaddy's was fucking trash.

[:

[00:05:08] Scott Moran: But when I

[:

[00:05:13] Scott Moran: gaddy's, their ranch dressing is watered down. It's disgusting.

[:

[00:05:26] Frank Roll III: Well, we ate lunch. Motherfucker goes to the corner store, gets his own ranch

[:

[00:05:41] Scott Moran: Just, is that not like a nationwide thing? It probably is at this point. I don't do it, but I remember not ever seeing anyone do it. Nah, man. No. It's like how hot dogs are different everywhere.

[:

[00:05:56] Frank Roll III: So I don't do the ranch. I just want the pizza.

[:

[00:06:07] Frank Roll III: It was awesome. If you're in that area, just fucking do a little side trip. It's cool. Yeah.

[:

[00:06:16] Scott Moran: Yeah,

[:

[00:06:22] Scott Moran: it. I just went where a movie was. I would leave my video store and go rent at Hollywood video because I'd be like, we just didn't get this one.

[:

[00:06:36] Scott Moran: where they like jerk off in front of you and they give you a

[:

[00:06:40] Frank Roll III: The special two? No.

[:

[00:06:45] Frank Roll III: Uh, no. There were certain movies that Hollywood couldn't buy because they were like, Weinstein Productions in Weinstein went straight to Blockbuster, not Hollywood.

[:

[00:06:56] Frank Roll III: ran out Well at the thing at the time.

[:

[00:07:14] Scott Moran: at Hollywood Video. A lot of the people that ask for that too, I would be like, you're not gonna like it.

[:

[00:07:21] Frank Roll III: ever. Somebody had accidentally returned one to our store. It was a blockbuster dvd, but it got back to our store. And so that's the thing is we would tease people, we'd be like, oh, we have one and you can't have it. Did you watch it though?

[:

[00:07:53] Frank Roll III: Little Pearl. Mini Pearl. Mini pearl. It's a pearl

[:

[00:08:04] Frank Roll III: time. That's fine. I watched two movies in one

[:

[00:08:10] Frank Roll III: I've been watching some random shit, you know, like I said, traveling.

[:

[00:08:26] Frank Roll III: I've always wanted one of those, um, be like, Hey, do you have today's fresh ground?

[:

[00:08:37] Frank Roll III: It crossed my mind and I was like, no, I didn't

[:

[00:08:46] Scott Moran: Well,

[:

[00:08:50] Scott Moran: in it. I was like, you'll know the fucking scarecrow. That is what I was talking about. I see. It's my favorite sex scene in the movie ever to date. I was like, no, she's not going. On the record, that's the best. Mia Goth has participated in two of my favorite sex scenes in a movie now, and I'm not talking about X infinity pool.

[:

[00:09:12] Scott Moran: it's a long one.

[:

[00:09:16] Scott Moran: to, she's so good in both of them. Her performance in this and her performance in that are some of the scariest things I've ever seen in my life. What kind of horror movie is this? It's not like, you know, X was a Texas chainsaw massacre sort of movie.

[:

[00:09:35] Frank Roll III: Was X a weekend away even though they were filming

[:

[00:09:39] Frank Roll III: I mean, I mean, a weekend away includes filming a porn, right? Sure. Why not? Dinner parties, porn movie, same thing. I'm

[:

[00:09:52] Scott Moran: But with Avatar, the way of Water's crew, they borrowed the crew cuz they were on break and they were all in New Zealand. This was New Zealand. I saw that they needed work. So that's who shot this movie. I bet they were

[:

[00:10:07] Scott Moran: I bet they were like, this is way more fun. This is blood and shit like that over there.

[:

[00:10:17] Frank Roll III: people holding their breath

[:

[00:10:29] Frank Roll III: once X was out.

[:

[00:10:35] Scott Moran: sooner than later. It took a whole year though. X came out fast. Has it been a

[:

[00:10:43] Scott Moran: that long. No, it's been a year since Pearl was for rent on Amazon. Really? Yes. Time flies just about a year.

[:

[00:10:57] Frank Roll III: Nine months. That Hugh Grant movie, Julianne Moore.

[:

[00:11:05] Scott Moran: That wasn't bad. Actually. That was good. It was my first time doing a Hugh Grand impression. Yeah, you

[:

[00:11:11] Scott Moran: Dungeons and Dragons. I feel like it's a, he speaks with the bottom teeth. The bottom teeth. Just the bottom.

[:

[00:11:28] Frank Roll III: 1918. You know, people didn't have a problem wearing their masks. Then

[:

[00:11:38] Scott Moran: Yeah. But, and I was like, oh, shit. The, yeah. That would be what it's, and then I was doing math in my head and I was like, wait, but that would make her Oh. Oh, right. It's the seventies in X. Yeah. Weird. Starting with the middle. I think this wouldn't have been as good without x. But it's also much better than X to me because this was more like the shining, this was watching someone slowly go crazy and then chop someone up with an X.

[:

[00:12:05] Scott Moran: really? I did. I mean, I, I'm a slasher movie guy, so it's like, it was kind of pedestrian as far as slasher movies go,

[:

[00:12:17] Scott Moran: This was something I don't think we see very often.

[:

[00:12:20] Frank Roll III: Well, and like you're saying it, it had a different feel, you know, a little less hacking slash I mean, it was

[:

[00:12:37] Frank Roll III: Well, yeah, I mean, she was going down to the Picture show, you know, watching the war propaganda films followed by the Flick.

[:

[00:12:52] Scott Moran: That porn that he shows her. Yeah. It's called Free To Ride. Free To Ride. It was one of the first pornographic movies,

[:

[00:13:00] Scott Moran: footage, they think. 1915. There's debate there. It was filmed in 1920, which would've been after this movie.

[:

[00:13:12] Scott Moran: That's like, whoa, I looked it up. DW Griffith.

[:

[00:13:16] Scott Moran: was that the performer? That was the, the, uh, the director. Oh, okay. That particular Lou film. And, you know,

[:

[00:13:32] Scott Moran: movies.

[:

[00:13:37] Frank Roll III: Some people call it cruising.

[:

[00:13:46] Frank Roll III: guy is. Same kind of thing. I was like, he looks like a winter soldier guy to me.

[:

[00:14:01] Scott Moran: him. Well, no one's more

[:

[00:14:07] Frank Roll III: Hank, you got one expensive mustache.

[:

[00:14:21] Frank Roll III: on, six pack. Slim up just a little

[:

[00:14:31] Scott Moran: Um, but I loved that Scarecrow scene though. It, I haven't stopped thinking about it since I saw it. Well,

[:

[00:14:39] Scott Moran: alien? That scarecrow looked way too human. What was

[:

[00:14:47] Frank Roll III: I

[:

[00:14:51] Frank Roll III: face

[:

[00:14:54] Frank Roll III: day, early in the afternoon,

[:

[00:15:06] Frank Roll III: Intimacy coordinator.

[:

she's

[:

[00:15:14] Scott Moran: Yeah. Cause they have intimacy coordinators now. She was the intimacy coordinator and uh, she's not German. She learned German for the part in a few weeks and tricked some of the avatar crew that were German.

[:

[00:15:39] Frank Roll III: Ah, I was trying to think of something in German to say, but I didn't actually take German.

[:

[00:15:52] Scott Moran: I was like, wow. It had me the whole time though.

[:

[00:16:04] Scott Moran: yeah, I knew that was what was coming. I also like saw in the, you know, in the trailer she's in the driveway with the ax. Yeah. And so I knew I hadn't seen it yet.

[:

[00:16:18] Scott Moran: liked the end of that movie.

[:

[00:16:22] Scott Moran: Oh my God. Five minutes over five minutes long. She did that? Yeah. Her eyes start watering. Watering

[:

[00:16:32] Scott Moran: really like they brought back the gator too.

[:

[00:16:40] Scott Moran: farmhouse. The tension he built on that dock in both movies, just putting that gator in the water. I did think it was really weird with a Gatorade, like I thought maybe she was gonna

[:

[00:16:56] Frank Roll III: Yeah,

[:

[00:17:00] Frank Roll III: Yeah. Cuz what was that like a goose or a duck she killed towards the beginning? Or was it a chicken goose? Duck chicken. It was a goose. Yeah, it was, you know, farm bird, uh, farm bird. Yeah. She was just like, just foul. Well, and then the way she talked to the cow, she's like, don't look at me like

[:

[00:17:16] Scott Moran: Like she would perform for the count too.

[:

[00:17:22] Scott Moran: It was so legit when he was like, you're scaring me. And I was like, that's exactly what it is about Meia goth. She goes from me being like, oh, she's pretty to being like, she scares the shit outta me. This one did it the most of, I think anything I've seen her

[:

[00:17:41] Frank Roll III: Yeah. You gotta see Infinity

[:

[00:17:42] Frank Roll III: So, yeah. I mean, I remember, uh, cure for Wellness and I know we've talked about it and, uh, Cronenberg's other movies.

[:

[00:17:50] Frank Roll III: No. The one with Patson in the spa. Half the space. One Life. Something Life. We've talked about it

[:

[00:17:57] Scott Moran: Yeah. High life. Yes. There we

[:

[00:18:04] Scott Moran: was Brandon Kronenberg did that high life too. I don't know. But you feel like that was that kind of movie?

[:

[00:18:14] Scott Moran: a couple scenes. You told me about it a few times.

[:

[00:18:35] Scott Moran: Did you ever see that with Matt Dillon? Yes. He was the serial killer. Yes. Yes. That is a Lars v True movie I'm down with. Don't wanna watch it again. But I, it took a lot

[:

[00:18:47] Scott Moran: watch

[:

[00:18:51] Frank Roll III: Soon after, like, I wanna do Pearl, the X, I wanna do it like that.

[:

[00:19:08] Scott Moran: Is Maxine after X? Yeah, it's after X. It's, it's gonna follow her cuz she's the final girl also. You didn't know that? I didn't know that. Holy shit. Yeah. I'll show you the trailer after we Nice. Finish recording. That's

[:

[00:19:24] Scott Moran: for. I'm glad he's doing stuff again.

[:

[00:19:29] Frank Roll III: and like you said, it's a, it's a different taste. The next was, you know, same. Same,

[:

[00:19:45] Scott Moran: It was, uh, murder court or something like that. Mumble core is like movies that are like not trained actors. Yeah. And, uh, splatter court, something like that. I forget what it is. They have a name for it. One of the cores. Yeah. But those guys all do it. You know, the, the guy who was like stood up in the meeting from the signal and he was in, uh, fault.

[:

[00:20:20] Frank Roll III: be more found footage movies.

[:

[00:20:23] Scott Moran: footage. This is kind of old. Mm. You may have seen it too. Sacrament. The Sacrament doesn't sound familiar. It's like a Jim Jones called, oh, documentary Crew. Hey. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. I can't wait to show you fucking the trailer for Maxine. Yeah, but I don't know what it's gonna be like.

[:

[00:20:57] Frank Roll III: I'm sure it's gonna be organized.

[:

[00:21:09] Frank Roll III: then it ends with her pregnant and that's like the boom. She

[:

[00:21:16] Frank Roll III: awesome.

[:

[00:21:21] Scott Moran: of just the beginning of Mia Goth. She's bending stuff, but this is her. She's hitting the top. I know she's getting typecast at this point. Mm-hmm. She's gonna be a horror movie girl. Ride that wave for a long time.

[:

[00:21:36] Frank Roll III: shit outta me, dude. The face at the end of this movie,

[:

[00:21:43] Frank Roll III: it made me uncomfortable, but I kept watching. I was like, how long is she gonna do it? How long is she gonna do it? And then I'm picturing while they're filming this is somebody like, like pushing, like how are they, are they saying anything?

[:

[00:21:57] Scott Moran: I think he just got up in her face with a camera and fucking filmed and he just hold it wanted. Just see how long she could do it. Hold
